It seems like the topic of whether the government (money coming out of our paycheck) should help the poor and underprivileged during the time when they need it the most, such as during the time of unemployment.
While undergoing lengthy conversations with these individuals, the one thought keeps resurfacing itself over and over again: that many Americans have lost their sense of humanism and are blindly following what they're told is destroying America.
During the conversation, I'll always pose the following question: Do you believe that every single person truly has the motivation, will power and intelligence to do what you want them to do? They'll always answer with a forceful yes.
Nothing is ever that simple. Ask yourself how are there still cannibals in the world. Why do the North Korean people still truly love their leader? How are genocides still possible?
People are bread very differently. It's up to us and our government to educate them differently and not to flat out deny them their right to live. I do believe that some sort of reform needs to be done where unemployed workers (who are receiving government assistance more than 1 month) need to start attending government sponsored seminars whenever they pick up their check. Seminars should be offered in numerous places (schools, churches, etc) so as to make it realistic for a person to attend. During those seminars basic economics need to be thought and basic money management needs to be enforced as well as the psychological benefits to having a person work for his or her dreams.
I usually follow up with, "Would you donate to animal shelters to keep the homeless cats and dogs alive?" Usually everything becomes clear at this point but if they ask me "why should we" I reply with "because we're humans."
